Trillium Health Partners (THP) Mississauga Hospital is a community-based institution that offers a full range of acute care services and specialized programs, including cardiac care. In 2018, THP was awarded a prestigious provincial quality award for our innovative cardiac program known as Putting Patients at the Heart (PPATH). PPATH redesigned the journey of care for cardiac surgery patients by streamlining and simplifying access to follow-up care for patients. It allows cardiac patients to return home sooner and with better support, reducing our post-surgery hospital visits.

THP’s Regional Cardiac Health Program currently performs approximately 1500 cardiac cases annually which include a standard of care of Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (OPCABG). The role of Perfusionists at THP has evolved to include a unique skill of surgical assisting. THP Perfusionists have a standard expectation to aid the Cardiac surgeon in all OPCABG cases and have the ability to convert to on-pump quickly in the event of emergency. The Perfusion department also supports THP’s extensive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Program.

In the year 2004, Trillium was one of the first hospitals in Canada to introduce the mini-extracorporeal circuit. Through 2006-2007, after reviewing and comparing results to a conventional circuit, THP showed a trending decrease in incidence of renal insufficiency, volume of transfused blood products and intensive care length of stay. It was from this data that to this day THP has become known for its specialized training in mini-bypass for all of our cardiac cases.

In addition to cardiac surgery cases, THP Perfusionists are present for all insertions and maintenance of intra-aortic balloon pump devices and perform a large number of non-cardiac cell saver cases in vascular, neuro and orthopedic surgery. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation is provided as a temporary emergency support using the CardioHelp. Currently there are eight full-time Perfusionists with a mixture of different backgrounds from respiratory therapy, nursing and academics to encompass a well-rounded group of individuals that result in an exceptional Perfusion Team here at THP.
