Located in the Vancouver downtown core, St. Paul’s Hospital provides a variety of services to a diverse patient population. Those services include managing patients with heart and/or lung disease, kidney disease, mental health, elder care, HIV/AIDS, obstetrics, and urban health. Our operating room consists of 14 theaters - including one hybrid room. St. Paul’s performs over 1,100 cardiac cases per year including heart transplants. The Perfusion department supports numerous programs including the heart failure program with VAD implantation, the adult congenital heart surgery program, and transcatheter heart valve program.
Our Perfusion equipment consists of the Sorin S5 heart lung machine and 3T heater-cooler, the Sorin Xtra autotransfusion system, the Sorin SCP equipped with the Spectrum monitor for ECMO, the Maquet CS100 IABP, the ROTEM delta, Terumo CDI in-line blood gas monitoring, and Radiometer ABL90 blood gas machine.
Recently, the Perfusion department in conjunction with the Emergency Department received funding to support an ECPR pilot study. The St. Paul’s Perfusion department is also affiliated with the BCIT Cardiovascular Perfusion Program serving as a clinical training site.
